SWELL is a group project built in the front yard of Wurster Hall in UC Berkeley campus. Thirteen graduate students worked in three weeks to design and build this interactive installation. SWELL consists of a wooden lamella-structured tube, flexible fabric skin and a bridge supported by two large wooden “scissors.” As people walk through the tube, the weight on the bridge gets tranferred to the scissors via pulleys, which as a result transforms the tube. At dark, images were projected on the surface of SWELL that added another layer of visual interaction to the surrounding.
