Residential Renovation
A full renovation of a hillside residence in a quintessential San Francisco neighborhood, reoriented to engage both distant views and the immediate landscape.
The main living level is opened into a continuous sequence anchored by a tall volume, drawing light deep into the interior and framing views toward the north. Subtle level shifts follow the slope of the site, allowing the spaces to unfold with the terrain.
A vertical stair, lit from above by a skylight, becomes a central light well connecting the levels, complemented by an elevator from the garage level. The upper floor is organized with bedrooms and bathrooms, where the bathing spaces are conceived as all-wet rooms in the Japanese ofuro tradition—enclosed, quiet, and open to a glimpse of sky above.
A front deck projects outward to capture expansive views and the shifting atmosphere of the western hills, while the rear opens to a more intimate garden carved into the hillside. The project moves between these conditions—more dramatic and more intimate—through restrained materiality and measured spatial transitions.
