Prototype Housing in Japan is a study of affordable modern design within very tight living conditions and site constraints. While high density housing is important in Japan, market demands make construction of single family homes preferable in many cases. We then asked ourselves how we could create the comfort and livability of a more spacious single family home on very small lots with densely packed programmatic requirements.

These nine single family homes averaging 1000 square feet with 3 to 4 bedrooms and 1 parking space each, achieve this by offering a strong connection to the environment, whether it be to the existing neighborhood, nearby ocean, or on a more intimate scale one's own small private garden.  Carefully placed openings, landscape planning, and working with the existing topography all helped create such visual connection and openness while keeping needed privacy.
