Beach House Prototype
Prototype Housing in Yokosuka, Japan is a study in how to provide affordable modern design to accommodate a typical family within very tight living conditions and site constraints. While high density housing is important in Japan, market demands make construction of single family homes preferable in many cases. We then asked ourselves how we could create the comfort and livability of a more spacious single family home on very small lots with densely packed programmatic requirements.
These nine single family homes averaging 1000 square feet with three to four bedrooms and one parking space each, achieve this by offering a strong connection to the environment, whether it be to the existing neighborhood, a visual connection with the nearby ocean, or on a more intimate scale one's own small private garden. A secondary focus then became how to provide such openness and connection, while still maintaining privacy between units as they are in such close proximity to each other. Carefully placed openings, landscape planning, and working with the existing topography all helped negotiate these issues.
